Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir | Hotel Silence | OUT NOW | REVIEW | Translated Tuesdays

I'm kicking my new feature
Translated Tuesdays off with a review of the little gem that is Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir.

Plot: Jonas feels like his life is over. So he comes up with a foolproof plan: to buy a one-way ticket to a chaotic, war-ravaged country & put an end to it all.

But on arriving at Hotel Silence, he finds his plans - his anonymity - begin to dissolve under the foreign sun.

A compelling quirky little read (only 149 pages long) -  the writing is minimalistic but beautiful. I enjoyed the bittersweet humor within it. Ultimately I found it to be uplifting and thought-provoking.

"Instead of putting an end to your existence, can't you just put an end to this you and become someone else instead?

People: The characters are so vividly drawn it was very easy to empathize with them all.

Pace: This is a medium-paced novel with two halves one set in Iceland the other an unnamed war-torn country. It is a quietly powerful read that packs an emotional punch & leaving you with a positive message that stays with you long after turning the last page.

Pick up if you enjoyed:
